HISTORY BEHIND OUR MASKS
Paulski Art strives to deliver collectible and authentic African masks from regions across the African continent. We examine our pieces thoroughly and do our best to photograph each section of a mask so a buyer/collector can have a full understanding of what they’re purchasing without any surprises. That is our promise!
The Kuba live in the Lower Kasai region of central Zaire/Congo in a rich environment of dense forest and savanna. Kuba arts primarily address status, prestige, and the court; they are manifestations of social and political hierarchy. Mukenga mask, representing an elephant, is characterized by a beaded trunk/Cowrie shells and two small tusks protruding from the base of the trunk. As in other African kingdoms, such as the Ashante and those of the Cameroon grassfields, elephants are associated with royal power. According to the Kuba proverb, "an animal, even if it is large, does not surpass the elephant.
Please note these are traditional/old masks. Imperfections are to be expected such as dings, broken cowrie shells and minor cracks. We do our best to showcase the mask using as many photos as possible. Mask is in excellent condition.
